Since the law of December 9, 1903 concerning the separation of the Church and the State, the Monks are not any more civils servant remunerated by the government. They must thus provide for their own needs thus that with those for their church.
However the maintenance of the worship is expensive (building, household, formal garments, ornaments, reads, displacement, vehicle etc). A gift is request in order to cover all these expenses.
But there is another reason more Fondamentale still. The Christian must in effect to deserve the graces, which it asks to God via its priests. That, whatever the hoped grace (baptism, communion, marriage, exorcism blessing, etc...) Gold if the priest made gift of his own life with Lord, it is not possible to request the same thing from simple faithful. It was thus decided, since centuries, that in exchange of a sacrament, the Christian can discharge its "spiritual debt" by a material gift.
